People usually sit down to do some things and to stand up to do others… unless they are confined to a wheelchair. Being unable to stand up has a huge impact on the way that people are able to interact with others and their surroundings !
The i2i wheelchair has been developed to enable wheelchair users to enjoy the same physical and social interactions as others who are able to stand.
It gives people the choice to either sit as they would in a normal wheelchair, or to lift themselves up to a height that they might be if they were standing.
From reaching for the coffee in the morning, buying a sandwich at lunchtime, or enjoying a drink with friends in the evening; the situations where wheelchair users would benefit from being at a higher level are endless and so are the opportunities for the i2i wheelchair to make a difference.
The i2i wheelchair is a whole new concept of wheelchair design. It has been developed to allow the user to interface with others and their surroundings as if they were standing.
Very importantly it is practical stylish and affordable.
The i2i wheelchair is an active user wheelchair which is ridden !
The user rides on a special saddle type seat that can be positioned at two heights. In the lowered position the user is the same height as he would be in a traditional wheelchair.
In the raised position the user adopts a “mounted” stance. In this stance he adopts the same stance he might if sitting astride a horse. In the mounted stance he is at a similar height that he might be if standing.
In the mounted stance the user can reach the top shelf in the supermarket, reach cupboards in the kitchen and be at the right height to sing hymns in church. Should he want to he can also be at the right height to play darts and order a pint at his local pub !
In the raised position the user / wheelchair combination is very stable although we do recommend that the user does not use it in the mounted stance when on hills !
The user moves himself quickly and easily between the seated and mounted stances simply by gently pushing against the frame of the wheelchair.
This is made possible by the incorporation of a special energy conservation mechanism designed specifically for the i2i wheelchair.
It is very important to note that the i2i wheelchair is actuated solely by the effect of pushing gently on the frame of the wheelchair.
It does not have any on board batteries, motors or pumps.
In this way the wheelchair remains lightweight and can be manually propelled.
The i2i wheelchair is primarily an active user wheelchair however users who are less able can also enjoy the advantages of the i2i wheelchair by fitting the simple attendant adaptor kit. This kit allows the rider to be moved to and from the mounted stance by his attendant.
From reaching for the coffee in the morning, buying a sandwich at lunchtime, or enjoying a drink with friends in the evening; the situations where wheelchair users benefit from being at a higher level are endless and so are the opportunities for the i2i wheelchair to make a difference
